Port Blair, Oct 02: Gandhi Jayanti was celebrated in the Islands, together with the rest of the country today, to mark the birthday of the ‘Father of the nation’, Mahatma Gandhi. At a solemn function held at Mahatma Gandhi Statue, Mohanpura, the Lt. Governor, Prof. Jagdish Mukhi, chief guest of the function paid floral tribute to the Mahatma. The First Lady, Smt. Prem Mukhi also paid floral tribute to Mahatma Gandhi. The Chief Secretary, Mr. Anindo Majumdar, DGP, Smt. Nuzhat Hassan, Chairman PBMC, Mr. I P Singh, Adhyaksh Zilla Parishad, Mr. Jaydeb Kumar Dey, Senior officers of the Administration, Heads of Departments, public representatives, eminent citizen, social workers and general public, besides Swachcha Bharat Ambassador, Padmashree Naresh Chandra Lall also paid floral tribute to The Father of the Nation. Ram Dhuns were presented by the school students followed by multi religious prayers, in which recitation from the Holy Scriptures of Geetha, Quran, Guru Granth, Holy Bible, Buddhism and Baha’i were conducted to mark the occasion. A two minutes silence was observed as a mark of respect to the Mahatma.
Earlier, the Lt. Governor and other dignitaries also offered floral tribute at the Gandhi Statue at Gandhi Park.
Thereafter, the Lt. Governor and the First Lady witnessed the spinning of Khadi, which was presented by the representatives of industries.
Later, the Lt. Governor visited PBMC premises and unfolded a banner, declaring Port Blair City ‘Open Defecation Free’. He signed the declaration on the occasion. The declaration was countersigned by the Chief Secretary, the Chairperson PBMC, Principal Secretary (UD) and the Secretary (PBMC).
The Lt. Governor also flagged off a ‘Motor Cycle Rally’ marking the declaration of Port Blair City ‘Open Defecation Free’.
