
The Andaman Avians Club (AAC) registered under the Andaman Societies Act is the Island’s First club dedicated to birding in the islands, the motto being education and conservation. The idea was conceived after a birding workshop that was conducted by the Forest Dept. (wildlife) of A&N administration in June 2016. The group which comprises of individuals from various fields have been actively conducting various bird related programmes.ACHIVEMENTS IN LAST ONE YEAR The club members voluntarily participated in the “Indian Ocean Water Bird Count 2017”, during which data was collected in a systematic manner prescribed by Wetland International, Netherlands and the same was submitted for which a commendation was received from the Wetland International for conduct the count in all possible wetlands of South Andaman.
Club successfully completed the Campus Bird Count 2017 at JNRM, ANCOL, CIARI-ICAR and ANET which was organised by Bird Count India (Mysore).
Club members served as resource personnel for a nature camp and bird watching tour as a part of Wildlife Week 2016 organised by the Department of Environment and Forest, Andaman and Nicobar Administration at Mount Harriet National Park, South Andaman.
Club members served as resource personnel for wetland bird watching tour for the students of G.S.S. Junglighat on the occasion of World Wetland Day 2017 organised by the Department of Environment and Forest, Andaman and Nicobar Administration at Sippighat.
On account of World Sparrow Day, our club assisted Nature Club, JNRM, Port Blair for the successful conduction of Sparrow Photography Competition, Quiz Competition and the Main Event.
Organised bird watching tours with club members and updating generated data on e-Bird for almost all the Important Bird Area (IBA) in South Andaman.
The club is looking forward to inculcate Bird Watching as a hobby for the people of these Islands. With ongoing developments in the islands, sustainable growth needs to be the way forward and the club intends to highlight the effects of urbanization on bird life in these isles.With the guidance and support of many distinguished resource personnel, the club intends to achieve its goals within the near future. The AAC is thankful to the Dept. of Forest, A&N Administration for providing an unique platform which resulted in its formation.
