Port Blair, Aug 29: Schedule Tribe Component is one among important aspect where ICAR-CIARI is doing an excellent work for welfare of tribal community of Andaman & Nicobar group of Island. As a part of it Nicobari fishermen who own hodi (traditional boat) requested CIARI for OBM (Out Board Motor) as an input. Former Director CIARI, Dr.Sibnarayan Dam Roy had sanctioned 5 nos. of 4Hp (Horse power) OBM for the tribal community of Harminder Bay, Little Andaman. Distribution of the OBM to the beneficiaries took place on 14.08.2017 headed by programme co-ordinator Dr.SukhamMonalisha Devi, Scientist, ICAR-CIARI, supported by Skilled Supporting Staff of Fisheries Science Division, CIARI, Mr. K. Ali and Mr.Mohamad Jawed in co-ordination with Department of Fisheries, I/C Hut Bay Mr.Sajith Thomas. Five benificiaries name chosen for the input were Shri. Nicodimus, Shri. Fred Levy, Shri. Toranyu, Shri. Gabriel and Shri. Jacob. The input provided to the tribal community is for the benefits of the tribal community therefore it was made clear that any fishermen of their community who has fishing license can use the input provided with permission of 1st Headman. All the 5 Hodis chosen for fitting OBM is equiped with GPS and Life jackets as safety for the fishermen which have been provided earlier to the community by CIARI. A sea trial also conducted fitting OBM at Hodi of Fred Levy and it was successful. During the programme proper registration of the hodi, fishing licence for all the fishermen has been made clear in co-ordination with Department of Fisheries, Andaman Administration.
