The crew namely Mr. Galanisathanasios was reported suffering with severe pain in the lower right abdomen and suspected to be an appendicitis case with life threatening symptoms. Maritime Rescue Coordinating Centre, (MRCC) Port Blair on receipt of request from Greek MV Hamburg for urgent medical evacuation, swung into action.
Tele-medical advice was provided by the coast guard medical officer to the crew. Although, vessel was in Sri Lankan SRR, vessel desired to arrive off Port Blair, enroute for medical evacuation.
The vessel was directed to alter course and proceed towards Port Blair with maximum available speed to carry out early evacuation.
Simultaneously, Coast Guard Ship Rajkamal was sailed with a medical team for providing assistance.
The Coast Guard ship rendezvoused the merchant vessel north of six degree channel, close to Hut Bay late night hours on 26 Aug 17.
In challenging visibility and rough sea conditions, patient was successfully evacuated and the coast guard ship’s medical team administered the patient with basic first aid and stabilized the crew enroute before entering Port Blair in early morning hours.
On completion of handing/taking over formalities, MV Hamburg proceeded to next port of call Singapore.
Subsequently, the patient in stable condition was handed over to the local agent Mr. Rathnam of M/s Andaman Holidays Pvt. Ltd., Port Blair and was immediately admitted to GB Pant Hospital, Port Blair for further medical treatment.
On an average 200 ships transit daily through ten degree channel South of Campbell Bay. Such cases of medical evacuation and assistance will go long way in projecting the saviour image of Indian Coast Guard and A&N Administration.
The improved medical facilities in GB Pant hospital will surely help in instilling sense of safety among mariners transiting through Andaman sea.
