Port Blair, Aug 07: The festival of loving bond between brothers and sisters, Raksha Bhandhan, was celebrated at ANET (Andaman and Nicobar Environment Team), at North Wandoor. This day also witnessed a unique initiative taken by” COASTAL GREEN ZONE” of protecting environment, when the children of North Wandoor tied ‘Rakhi’ to the trees and promised to protect them.
“The idea of tying Rakhi to trees was very important because although we plant several trees on different occasions but is more essential to protect them and see that they grow properly,” said chanchal Singha Roy, Teacher of GSSS Manglutan and for that purpose they chose Banyan and other trees. After tying Rakhi, the workshop continued by watching two environments based documentary movies. Participated children of North Wandoor are then divided in four groups and went to observe the coastal Ecosystem. They got an opportunity to observe many floras and faunas related to Mangroves Ecosystem, such as Fiddler crabs, Periwinkle, Mudskipper,
Mangrove whelk, Ruddy Kingfisher etc , they returned and briefly elaborated their observations. There has to be a balance between progress and protection of environment because what could be better than to tie Rakhi to these trees and to extend a hand of protection in that auspicious day of Raksha Bandhan.”Coastal Green Zone” a volunteer run initiative for Protecting Mangroves and Coastal Ecosystem is run by Chanchal Singha Roy, National Awardee Teacher.
