Port Blair, June 04: ICAR-Central Island Agricultural Research Institute (CIARI), Port Blair celebrated the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan Pakhwara from 12.05.2017. The fortnight long celebration started with the pledge taking ceremony by all the staff members on 12th May 2017, thereafter cleanliness drive in and around the Institute premises was conducted.
On 20th May 2017, a live demonstration on “Vermicomposting/ Composting of Biodegradable waste” was demonstrated by Dr.A.Velmurgan, Sr. Scientist for the staff and family members. On 25th May 2017, in collaboration with KVK, South Andaman and Gram Panchayat, Chouldari, a tree planting cum awareness programme was conducted on green farming for farmers of Port Mourt village. The programme was attended by Shri. Sohan Prasad, Samiti Member, Smti. Rajeshwari Devi, PRI Member of Chouldari Gram Panchayat, Scientists of CIARI, staff members of KVK and farmers of the Port Mort village. Dr. B.Gangaiah, Dr. R.K. Gautam, Dr. Nagesh Ram, Dr. M.S.Kundu, Dr. R. Kirubasankar, Dr. Debasis Bhatacharya, Dr. A.K. De, Dr. S.K. Zamir Ahmed and other scientists spoke on the occasion and informed about the latest technologies developed by the institute. During the programme farmers were informed about concept of green farming by converting the agricultural waste into compost. Shri. Sohan Prasad in his address thanked ICAR-CIARI for selecting the Port Mourt village under the SBM programme. He informed that there is lot of scope for technological intervention in the areas such as paddy cultivation, plantation crops, fisheries and poultry farming.
After the awareness programme, cleanliness drive and mass tree plantation was conducted around the play ground area. On the same day a drawing competition for school students of Govt. Sr. Sec. School, Port Mort was also organized. Around 28 school students participated in programme. On the spot prizes were distributed to the winners and participants. Dr. Nagesh Ram, Dr. L.B. Singh and Dr. N.C. Choudhury, Dr. Zachariah George and Shri Abhay Kumar Srivastava coordinated the conduct of the programme.
Swachh Bharat Abhiyan Pakhwara concluded with the valedictory function held on 31.05.2017, wherein, a lecture on “Office Procedure with Special reference to Record Management and Digitization” delivered by Shri. Sushil Kumar Singh, Senior Administrative Officer, ICAR-CIARI, Port Blair for the benefit of the staff.
The overall programme was conducted under the Chairmanship of Dr. S. Dam Roy, Director, ICAR-CIARI and coordinated by Nodal Officer, Dr. Jai Sunder , SBM, ICAR-CIARI.
