Port Blair, May 25: The Electricity Department today said the deficiency of power in South Andaman is around 3.5 MW, which is the reason behind the load shedding in this Region.
Talking to Andaman Sheekha today, the Superintendent Engineer (In-charge), Electricity Department, B Ajit Kumar said that during summer season there is an additional load of five percent and the power generation in South Andaman reduces by certain percentage.
“Presently our availability is 34.5 MW and deficiency is 3.5 MW to cope up with that there is a rotational load shedding in South Andaman region,” said Mr. Ajith Kumar.
Mr Ajit said that to cope up with this there is rotational load shedding that too on alternate days and the schedule also gets published in the media.
The In-charge Superintendent Engineer further said that the department is trying all possible efforts to improve the Power situation in the islands and the Department has already requested Surya Chakra Power Plant to put their unit number 3 on load as fast as possible and the department is also doing its best to recondition the existing DG sets available with the Electricity Department.
Further explaining about the Load Shedding in the North & Middle Andaman region he said that due to the delay in the monsoon the water level in the Kalpong Dam is reduced which is the reason behind the Load Shedding.
However he said that to cope up with the situation in N&M Andaman the Department will soon augment a Diesel Power Plant and in addition to that some of the DG sets from Havelock are also going to be transferred to Diglipur very soon so that in the next monsoon their will not be any problem.
Finally, the In-charge Superintendent Engineer said that the SPCL has assured them that within a month they will put there unit number 3 in load and in addition to that the department itself is going to hire 15MW of power through open tender very soon, which will solve the power problem completely.
