I am happy to learn that Directorate of Health Services, Andaman and Nicobar Administration is celebrating World Health Day on 7th April, 2017 with the theme “Depression: let’s talk” in A&N Islands along-with rest of the World, to create awareness about depression and its prevention.
Depression can happen to anybody and it often strikes at a young age. It causes mental anguish and affects person’s ability to carry out every day task. Fortunately, depression can be prevented and treated even at Primary Health Centre. At its worst, depression can lead to suicide.
The prevention of depression is an area that deserves attention and effective community participation. On an individual, community and national level, it is time to educate ourselves about depression and support those who are suffering with this mental disorder and never to stigmatise the depressed patients.
I appeal to all including PRIs, Civil Societies and NGOs to come forward to educate the communities about prevention of depression. I also appeal to the print and electronic media to disseminate the message of prevention of depression in our community. I wish all success to the World Health Day celebration.
