Mayabunder, Mar 24: An unexploded bomb was found at Mayabunder region of North Andaman today, triggering large scale curiosity among local residents.
As per details, the vintage bomb, was found at Govt Model Sr. Secondary School campus, Mayabunder by construction workers of Mayabunder region, who were digging earth under MGNREGA (Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act) project.
As soon as the matter was reported to the Mayabunder Police unit, the area was cordoned off and the bomb was brought to an open area and kept safely under close supervision of Police Department.
“It seems it is a World War II bomb. The Bomb Disposal Team of Indian Army has already been informed about it, who will come and dispose off this bomb. Till that time no one will be allowed to go close to the bomb for safety reasons,” Mr. Ingit Pratap Singh, the Superintendent of Police, of North and Middle Andaman told Andaman Sheekha today.
He said that the Mayabunder Region has many Japanese Bunkers, built during World War II and therefore this is possible that the rusted bomb is of that time.
Andaman and Nicobar Islands had witness several air raids from both British and Japanese Forces during World War II, before and during Japanese Occupation which was from 1942 to 1945.
In many occasions in recent past such unexploded vintage World War II bombs were found in various corners of Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
However, there are some people who claims that the labourers had found this bomb but ignored it and threw it inside the jungle and after some day, when they had some doubt about the substance they informed the matter to the Principal Govt Model S S School, and immediately the matter was informed to Tehsildar and PS Mayabunder. After receiving the information the SP (N&M), Tehisilder and SHO reached the spot for spot inspection.
