Port Blair, Mar 09: The Non-Gazetted Govt. Officers’ Association, Andaman and Nicobar Islands observed the International Women’s Day today at 5.30 p.m. at Crusade House, Phoenix Bay, Port Blair. To mark the occasion, a discussion on the theme “Women’s Employment and Empowerment” was organized.
Women government employees working at Port Blair/South Andaman areas participated in the programme, in large number, which was presided over by Smti T.S. Premlatha. At the outset Smti Thilotama Devi, a Retired Headmistress has facilitated. In her Presidential address Smti T.S. Prem Latha, Convener, Women’s Sub-Committee of NGOs’ Association underlined the need of awareness among the women about their rights.
Smt Nazreen Begum, Organising Secretary of the Association explained the importance of the International Women’s Day and relation between employment and empowerment through self reliance. Addressing the gathering Smti Thilotama Devi shed light into achievement of women in various sectors of employment.
Mr. Nirmala, Divisional Secretary, All India Postal Employees Union (P-III) expressed concern on diminishing number of employment chances in Govt. Sector. Addressing the meeting, Smt Rehana Begum, Retired Headmistress exhorted women employees to pressurize the authorities to provide better facilities in their work place. Smti Reba Rani Sarkar, Secretary, Health Department Sub-Committee explained various problems facing by women for suitable employment opportunities in the islands. Smti Usha Sharma, Smti Suma Nair, Ajosrota Das and many other women employees expressed their views in the meeting.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. P.Sathypal, President of the Association greeted the womens employees on the occasion and appealed to unite in their struggles for empowerment. Mr. T.S. Sreekumar, General Secretary, Non-Gazetted Govt. Employees Association Association explained the theme of this year for International Women’s Day and said that equal rights in employment can only be possible when there is equal opportunity for women.
