Port Blair, Mar 08: ICAR-Central Island Agricultural Research Institute, Port Blair in association with its KVK ,Kavaratti conducted training on Nutritious Kitchen Garden (NKG)at Rang Manch Hall and Feed and fodder augmentation at Dept. of Veterinary office , on 5 & 6 th March , 2017 for the farmers representing ten villages, at Minicoy, Lakshadweep.
Shri LG Ibrahim Manikfa , Chairperson, Village Development Panchayat (VDP) was the chief guest and Shri Cherian Koya, Deputy Commissioner Incharge was the guest of honour. Shri P. Ibrahim, Plant Protection Assistant ,Dr Hussain Aougee, VAS, ,Shri K. Devadas , OIC ,and Shri Vidyadaran, from RC, CPCRI were present on the occasion .
Speaking on the occasion the Chief guest, while appreciating the effort of CIARI in conducting the useful training programmes, advised the farmers to take up the cultivation of vegetable and fodder in their backyard as well as in the field , so as to attain nutritional security of each household at minimal cost. He placed the need of Virgin coconut oil extraction machine establishment as a community asset creation under TSP for making of virgin coconut oil and also for employment generation.
On 5thMarch , 2017, DrS.K.Zamir Ahmed , Principal Scientist (Agriculture Extension ), conducted training on “Nutritious Kitchen Garden (NKG)” with the concept of Health , Happiness and Wealth . Based on the feedback , a group task was conducted, wherein the participants projected on the future NKG in their respective areas. During the interaction Dr . B. Gangaiah , informed about the soil health and the crop management , Dr.V.M. Abdul Gafoor SMS, KVK, Kavaratti on the animal waste management in the garden and Shri Shareefudeen H.K Technical Assistant, on the crops to be incorporated in the NKG.Each participant were provided with seed kit containing seven types of vegetables.
On 6th March , 2017 , during the training on” Feed and fodder augmentation” , Dr.B. Gangaiah, Head , NRM through a power point presentation ,sensitized the participants on the ways and means of producing feed and fodder for integrating livestock into the farming, which was followed by a video screening on azolla cultivation. Dr V.M A. Gafoor, SMS, KVK, Kavaratti , spoke on the proper feeding method of poultry &cattle , in addition he also conducted a method demonstration on de worming in cattles. Dr S.K. Zamir Ahmed, Principal Scientist conducted both pre and post evaluation of the programme. The participants were provided with fodder cuttings , mineral mixture, deworming tablets and vitamin supplements during the training.
Both of training were conducted under the Tribal Sub Plan and guidance of Dr. S. Dam Roy, Director ICAR-CIARI, Port Blair.
