Port Blair, Mar 07: Coast Guard Ship Aruna Asaf Ali conducted a Community Interaction Program in co-ordination with MRCC Port Blair at Fish Landing Centre, Junglighat on 07 Mar 17 as part of developing social connect with coastal community and sensitizing fishermen folk under the guidance of Headquarters Coast Guard Region (A&N). The interactions were aimed at educating and encouraging the fishermen and coastal population about safety and security issues and instilling a sense of coastal security among the coastal population. The event was attended by Shri Sunil, Superintendent of Fisheries and Shri Nagesh, Head of fishermen along with 30 local fishermen.
During these interactions the fishermen folk are informed on various safety aspects at sea while fishing such as use of life jackets, life buoys, safety equipments and functioning of distress alerts transmitters (DATs). A medical lecture on first aid at sea was also organized. The coastal populations are sensitized on various security issues such as whom to inform when foreign poaches are sighted and how to report any suspicious activity at sea. The fishermen are informed about toll free helpline number 1554 of coast guard Maritime Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC) and police marine force center number 1093 to pass safety and security information without any delay.
