Port Blair, Jan 20: Shri B.Eswar Rao, Chairperson, PBMC, alongwith Shri Yashpal Garg Secretary, PBMC, Councillor and Officers of the Council inspected ward No. 14 and 16 on 20-01-2017.
The team visited Telgu Basthi at Old Pahargaon, ward No 16 where construction of major drain is underway. Construction of this drain will alleviate the tribulations being faced by the citizens residing within the area especially during rainy season.
For the last ten years citizens of this areas are facing problems due to ineffectual storm water drainage system that are blocked recurrently. This area in the city is mainly affected during monsoon. When the water level was crossing the normal limits in residential areas, the drainage system measurably failed to pass the water.
The drains constructed earlier over the past decade have repeatedly proved ineffective. One of the main reasons for the blockage of the drainage systems were due to dumping of garbage as well as failure to ensure timely de-silting.
The existing drain is only 2 mtrs width which is insufficient to free flow of water received during heavy rain pour, which arrest unobstructed flow of water eventually leading to water logging and emerging in a temporary flood like situations. Keeping in view, now the nearby residents agreed to set off 1mtrs. on either side of the drain. It is imperative to ensure unobstructed movement of water, Chairperson appealed the nearby residents to co-operate with the Council’s workers while constructing the drain so that the work can be completed in a time bound manner.
Thereafter, the team visited Thirupathi Temple Road, Junglighat area and the Chairperson directed the Executive Engineer (Wks) to take up road work of the said area from the funds available under UIDSSMT scheme immediately.
The residents of Thirupathi Temple road present there complained that the pay and use toilet is functioning for 2-3 hours only in a day which is insufficient to the requirements of needy persons. They requested to increase the timing of functioning of Pay and Use toilet to round the clock. The Secretary, PBMC exhorted that to run the public convenience round the clock may incur huge expenditure hence, the council is in a action to invite expression of interest.
