Port Blair, Jan 17: Animal Science Division, ICAR-CIARI in collaboration with KVK, Nimbudera organized series of three awareness programme on “Scientific goat rearing” at Baratang & Nimbudera, Middle Andaman on 11.01.2017 to 12.01.2017. The awareness programme was conducted under All India Co-ordinate Research Project on Goat Improvement. A total of 62 goat farmers from both the places attended the programme. Dr. Jai Sunder, PI of the project, Dr. A.K. De, Scientist, PRI Members, Dr. Shailesh Kumar, Dr.B.L. Meena, Er. Manoj Kumar, Shri. Basantia, SMSs and Dr. Shardul Vikram Lal, SMS KVK, Nimbudera coordinated the programme.
Dr. Jai Sunder, PI of the project delivered detailed talk about the origin, objective and purpose of the project. He elaborated about the establishment of goat cluster in the Middle Andaman region for improving the productivity of the goat to sustain the livelihood security through goat rearing. He also talked about the scientific management practices through feeding, housing, health management and scientific breeding policy and techniques for obtaining more body weight from the existing goat population through selection procedure. He also urged all the farmers to utilize the opportunity for improving the productivity and taking goat farming in more scientific way.
Dr. A.K. De spoke about the types of breeds available in the islands and selection of suitable breed for sustainable production. Dr. Shardul Vikram Lal detailed about the management of goat in the farmers field through various supplements viz. feeding of azolla, cultivation of fodders, feeding of mineral mixtures etc. Dr. Shailesh Kumar elaborated about the various schemes of the KVK and urged the farmers to join the project to get maximum benefit though different technological intervention. The farmers also interacted with the resource persons on various field problems and management of goat rearing. On this occasion, mineral mixtures, vitamin tonic and scientific folder on Dweepon me Bakri Paalan were also distributed to the farmers. Later a field visit was conducted to the goat farmer’s field and on the spot advice and suggestion were also given to improve the practices through scientific techniques.
