Unnati drawn a follow-up programme to carry out the appeal of the Lt. Governor, A&N Islands made through Good Morning Port Blair – A programme of All India Radio Port Blair for eradication of social evils. Prof. Jagdish Mukhi said use of tobacco products and liquor are the root cause of suicidal tendency prevailing in these Islands.
Unnati which has required expertise and working experience in the field of tobacco control measure since last 7yrs also organized a workshop on State Level National Capacity building on tobacco for law enforces, NGOs and PRIs at Zilla Parishad conference hall on 17-02-2010 in association with the support of HRIDAY a Delhi based organization considering the magnitude of use of tobacco products and tobacco related diseases.
In the workshop the Chief Secretary, Inspector General of Police and other senior officials were also participated. The workshop has encouraging results and law enforcers also actively worked but due to some reasons the programme not received the required attention and support past 2-3 yrs. Now the action initiated by present Lt. Governor to ban tobacco products from 2nd October 2016 and action taken by the Administration to curtail the consumption of liquor in these Islands not only welcomed the appreciation of general public but also encouraged social organization to eradicate these social evils in these Islands.
Unnati which already working to control in the use of tobacco decided to organize special campaigns up to 31-03-2017. During this campaign meeting will be organized in different villages to aware people the ill-effects of use of tobacco will be explained besides distribution of hand out on ill-effects of tobacco.
The first meeting was held on 15-11-2016 at south point by Unnati in association with Women Welfare Committee and ward Councilor Smti. Vinita Malhotra who presided over the function and Dr. R.K. Halder was the Chief Guest. The meeting was addressed by Dr. R.K. Halder, Smti. Vinita Malhotra ward Councilor, Shri. C. Mohammed President Unnati, Smti. Shanta Kumari, Smti. Albakka and Smti. Sheela. They highlighted about details regarding ill-effects of tobacco.
Smti. Vinita Malhotra ward Councilor expressed her happiness for organizing such useful programme and thanked Unnati NGO for enlightening them about various ill-effects of tobacco use and requested to organize similar programmes.
Dr. R.K. Halder explained in details quoting example of several cases for proper understanding of participants.
Vote of thanks was read by Smti. Shanta Kumari, President Women Welfare Committee who especially thanked Unnati for awaring public with useful information about ill-effects of tobacco and tobacco related diseases. She further said the participants and general public highly appreciated Hon’ble Lt. Governor for taking various bold measures to ban tobacco products and curtail use of liquor in these Islands.
