Port Blair, Nov 04: Cases of sexual abuse on women and children are increasing day by day. Every other day there are media reports about cases of sexual abuse in Andaman, which is now a serious cause of concern, for Islanders.
Two years back the then Lt. Governor had asked the social welfare department to bring a team of experts from Mainland and study the cases of sexual abuse in Andaman but clearly no such steps have yet been taken by social welfare department. Infact no seriousness has been shown till date by social welfare department to do something to address this serious problem.
There is absolutely no doubt that the crime against women and children is on the rise and media reports are only an indication that how bad the situation is. This shows the changing social trend in these Islands and impact of television as well as movies in our youths. Hence there is a need to invite a group of social scientists from mainland and study the local society so that a remedial measure can be taken to stop such crimes.
There is also a need to keep local people busy in constructive things so that they don’t get diverted towards such crime. In any way a detailed study by only professional can actually tell us what has gone wrong in Andaman society. If no step is taken now then tomorrow these cases may also increase in these Islands.
If the Administration is serious about tackling the issue professionally then first there is a need to get help of professionals so that we can understand the actual problem and think of remedial measures.
