Port Blair, Oct 26: As part of united Nation Day Celebration, a seminar was organized by the Department of political Science, JNRM, Port Blair on 24th October, 2016. The topic of the seminar was “U N Declaration of Human Rights and India” smt. Vasanth kannabiran, renowned Feminist, author and Social Activist was the chief Guest for the function.
Addressing the gathering Smt. Vasanth Kannabiran traced the history behind the evolution of human right and the United Nations Declaration of human Right (UNDHR). AS a feminist she observed that women have specific contribution in the society and this has to be recognized. She felt the need to educate the people, especially men on the issues of gender justice. In her thought – provoking speech she she felt that the hope of the country lies in the youth in achieving the goals enshrined in the UNDHR and called upon the students to stand up for the protection of Human Right and Gender Justice. Sri. D. Ayyappa, Chairman, Alumni Association, JNRM and General Secretary, Andaman and Nicobar Gazetted Officers’ Association, special invitee, expressed the view that though the UNDHR has included various provisions, the actual “vision”of human right has changed. In spite of many legislations to protect human right, violation take place in various nations, he opined.
From the Faculty side, sri N. Balakishnan, Associate Professor ands sri Venkatesh kumar singh Assistant professor expressed their views on the theme. Student from the Department of political Science who participated in the seminar include miss Ekta Rani (II M.A.Political Science), Thamalika Sikari(I M.A. Political Science) and Deepankar Dey (III B.A.Political Science)
Earlier, welcoming the gathering Dr. N.Francis Xavier, Principal, JNRM opined that awareness has to be created among the people, especially youth regarding various aspects of human right and funtaions like this will be platforms for the purpose. He also gave a profile of the islands and the social problems the islanders are facing
Dr. S.S. Sreekumar, Associate Professor and Head, Department of political Science coordinated the whole programme and proposed vote of thanks.
