Port Blair, Oct 24: A 23 years old lady was undergoing regular check-ups during her first pregnancy, when she was detected to have fibroids (tumours of uterus), but fortunately she had an uneventful pregnancy. Her labour pains started on 12 Oct 2016, but during early period of delivery; the heartbeat of the baby was going down, hence it was decided to conduct through caesarean section. A healthy male baby weighing 3 Kg was delivered and she was found to have multiple large fibroids. Traditionally the fibroids should not be removed at the time of caesarean section as the operation is risky but of late the thinking has been changing. It was decided to remove those fibroids. Team of doctors consisting of doctors from department of gynaecology Dr. SK Kathpalia, Dr. Manju Mehrotra and Dr. Bhabani Pegu, under anaesthesia by Dr Anil Kumar N and Dr Sanjay Kumar, performed this difficult and challenging operation of removal of three large fibroids. This difficult surgery was possible because of help from department of blood transfusion headed by Dr. Sahil Sehgal and the operation theatre matrons Ms Ashruand Ms Kala along with other supporting and ancillary staff of the hospital. She recovered well from the surgery. This is the first time that such a difficult and challenging operation has been performed at GB Pant Hospital, ANIIMS. The lady had to be given three bottles of blood transfusion. Parents of the new born baby are very happy and relieved that all went off well. Baby is doing well and active.
