Port Blair, Oct 20: The President, INTUC, Mr Kuldeep Rai Sharma, has raised the demand for issue of uniforms to the employees of Municipal Council with the Secretary, PBMC. In a letter, Mr Sharma said that as per established norms, uniforms should be issued to the municipal employees once in two years and stitching are also be paid by the department. Uniform to the employees of PBMC was last issued during January 2014 and the due date for next issue of uniform was January 2016. However, the same has not been issued even after a lapse of more than 10 months. Stitching charges for the uniform issued during 2014 were also not paid to the employees, he said.
The INTUC President inviting the attention of the Council towards a circular directing the employees to wear uniform while attending their duty failing which they will not be allowed to attend their duty for the day and marked ‘Absent”, Mr Sharma said that the uniforms last issued has outlived its life and not fit for wearing, hence forcing the workers / employees to perform duties in uniform is not acceptable. He urged the Secretary, PBMC to withdraw the instant circular immediately and to drop action, if any, initiated against the workers/employees of the Council on the basis of said circular in the better interest of employer and workers relationship or else the Union will be constrained to launch an agitation to fight for the rights of the workers.
