Billyground, Oct 17: Death of a pregnant jersey cow due to electrocution after coming in contact with a high tension electric cable which snapped and fell on the ATR road has trigged public outrage in Billyground, Middle Andaman.
According to reports, at around 10 pm yesterday, a high tension power cable snapped and dropped on the ATR road.
Unattended by the officials of the Electricity Department for several minutes, three cows came in contact with the high tension line of which two escaped electrocution narrowly while one died in the accident. Sources claim that around two to three vehicles also managed to narrowly escape from coming in contact with the high tension line during a period of 35 minutes after which staff of the concerned Electricity Office reached the spot to rectify the fault.
PRI members and general public has registered strong protest against the Electricity Department for their lethargic approach in rectifying the fault which claimed a cow in the region.
The BJP State member of the area, Mr Dilip Das urged the Adhyaksh, Zilla Parishad, North and Middle Andaman, Saw Tatoo to grant compensation to the owner of the victim cow which died due to electrocution and also registered his displeasure over the lethargy of the Electricity Department.
Following the request of the Adhyaksh, Zilla Parishad, North and Middle Andaman and intervention of the Deputy Commissioner of the District, the Electricity Department has reportedly agreed to compensate the livestock owner.
Meanwhile, the Executive Engineer of Electricity Department, Rangat, has requested all livestock owners of the region to refrain from allowing their cattle to stray on the ATR road as high tension power cable pass through the road network to prevent such accidents in future.
