Port Blair, Aug 16: On the occasion of 70th Independence Day Parade, the Tri-colour was hoisted at Ross Island for the first time since Independence. In this historic event, a majestic 60 feet high flag mast was installed by the Indian Navy at Ross Island. The heavy mast was transported to Ross Island in a unique and precise operation involving underslung carriage of the mast by an Air Force MI-17 V5 helicopter.
In a solemn ceremony, the national flag was hoisted with presentation of arms for national salute by the Naval Ceremonial Guard of honour and playing of the National Anthem by the Naval Band in the backdrop. The flag is conspicuously visible from several locations at Port Blair. The Tri-colour would continue to enrich the patriotic fervour amongst the tourists and visitors.
In several other events, Components and units of ANC at various stations spread over the A&N archipelago celebrated the 70th Independence Day with traditional enthusiasm and fervour. INS Karmuk was open for visitors on 13 Aug 16 at Port Blair. Ships were open for visitors at Mayabunder and Kamorta as well. More than 1000 islanders visited INS karmuk including approximately 500 school children. Five ships including two Coast Guard ships were illuminated on 15 Aug 16.
A 104 man strong contingent of Andaman and Nicobar Command comprising officers and men of Army, Navy, Air force, and Coast Guard components participated in the Parade, coordinated by Commanding Officer of INS Jarawa. The Parade was commanded by Commander G Arun of Indian Navy, marching to the patriotic tunes played by Army pipe band and Navy brass band. The aerial assets of ANC were also on full display as fly past was carried out by MI 17 V5 helicopter, which carried the Tricolour under slung and also showered flower petals on the cheering crowd. Later at 1200 hrs, 21 Gun salute from Ross Island was fired on behalf of Andaman and Nicobar Command.
