Port Blair, Aug 11: A three-day hands-on training programme on “Auxiliary Fishery products” organised by ICAR-CIARI at the Marine Research Laboratory in Marine Hill got underway on Wednesday. Inaugurating the training, Dr. S. Dam Roy, Director, ICAR-CIARI, mentioned about the different value added products that can be made from the fishery available in the island waters and the prospects of value addition in livelihood generation. He also stressed on the role of quality control in fish processing and the ethical factors that responsible fisheries throws on different possibilities within the industry. The guest of honour, Mr J. Chandrasekhar, Director, Department of Fisheries, Andaman and Nicobar Administration in his address noted on the importance of value added fishery products and the scope of launching such products in the island market. Mr S. C. Dey, Asst. Director, Department of Fisheries also stressed on the demand of processed fishery products and the potential it has on local employment generation.
During the three-day training, the seventeen registered participants will be given theoretical as well as practical knowledge with hands on experience on the production and process of value added fishery products. The trainees will also be provided awareness on quality assurance in fish processing through field visits to landing centres. Dr. R. Kiruba Sankar, Head (i/c), Fisheries Science Division, ICAR-CIARI welcomed the gathering and Dr. S. Monalisha Devi, Scientist, proposed the vote of thanks during the event.
