Port Blair, Aug 08: The Superintendent of Police (Traffic), Shri Atmaram V. Deshpande, IPS convened meetings with Auto Unions and Bus Owners’ Union on 28/07/2016 and 02/08/2016 respectively.
In the meeting, SP (Traffic) highlighted the duties and responsibilities of the traffic police. SP (Traffic) has requested the members to cooperate with traffic police.
SP (Traffic) appealed to the members of the unions to put forth grievances/suggestions if any, for better policing & enforcement of laws. During the meeting several points have been put forth by the members of the both unions viz Members stated that issue of permits to autoricksaw and taxis be restricted as vehicles are abundant in the city, more than city can handle and also that sufficient clientele was not available to justify their numbers; Members stated that marriage and other processions are creating nuisance and traffic jams and requested to control the same; Members requested to locate the parking places for autos at Dairy Farm, Junglighat etc.; Members requested that the speed breakers on the Chatham Bridge be painted and marked properly and necessary Signages also be placed on the either side of the bridge; Members informed that Bus Stops are not available at G.B. Pant Hospital and similar other places such as G/Charma Bazaar and Chatham and requested that Bus boxes be marked at the Bus Stops. They also complained that many a times public park their vehicle in Bus box and Members stated that backside gates be opened for certain schools as the front gates directly lead the children to main roads and cause congestion.
Considering, the grievances/suggestions put forth by the members of the unions, SP (Traffic) assured them that necessary measures will be taken to sort out the issues. SP (Traffic) concluded the meetings with advices/suggestions like Long distances buses should have two drivers at least to drive the vehicle to avoid driver fatigue which leads to accident and also to ensure to have a mechanic available on the bus to avoid being stranded on ATR, especially in reserve forest area; Buses should be kept in mechanically sound and fit condition and that vehicle should be subjected to technical inspection every six months instead of annual; Drivers should not indulge in drunken and dangerous driving; Each bus should have the doors and doors be kept shut while driving the vehicle and should not allow the passengers to travel on foot board. It is the bounden duty of the driver and conductor to ensure safety of the passenger while travelling in their bus; Drivers should wear uniform and display their PSV badges; Passengers especially tourist should not be levied unfair charges as it discourages the tourist flow to this islands and Traffic rules and regulation should strictly be followed by the drivers to ensure safety of the passenger.
