Port Blair, Jul 31: The 34th installation ceremony of the Rotary Club of Port Blair was held in the conference hall of Fortune Resort Bay Island here last evening. The Lt Governor, Lt. Gen. AK Singh (Retd) was the chief guest on the occasion. Addressing the gathering, he lauded the philanthropic services being rendered by Rotary Club of Port Blair for the welfare of the Islanders. “The Club should remain focused upon the well being of the society”, he advised the members.
Referring to these Islands, the Lt Governor said that there are many great things about A&N Islands, like nationalistic feeling and true representation of our Constitution. “There has never been a case of religious and regional strife, everybody keeps his culture intact, yet Hindi is the Lingua- Franca here and people are hard working too”, the Lt Governor said.
The Lt Governor further said that Health and Education are the two most important aspects for the future of A&N Islands. “Health is for today and Education certainly for tomorrow”, said the Lt Governor adding that the Administration has been focusing on Health and Education sectors and is making best efforts in bringing quality into these sectors. He also informed the gathering about the achievements/progress made in these two sectors in the recent years.
The Lt. Governor had a word of praise for the Rotary Club of Port Blair for the focus they give to the ‘Swachch Bharat Abhiyan’. “It is one of the schemes, Hon’ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modiji has taken up, which was the need of the hour”, the Lt. Governor said. As cleanliness covers a large sense, the Lt. Governor urged the Club to take lead on Swachch Bharat. “We have to make citizens realize that cleanliness is their right and duty and to educate them its benefits, he said. The Rotary Club can take lead in educating people on their own or partner with the Administration, the Lt Governor observed. The Lt. Governor further desired that the Rotary Club team should start some cultural activities as well. “Little involvement of Rotary Club in cultural activities will enrich the lives of people in Port Blair”, he opined.
The Rotary Club for the year (2016-17) is headed by its new President Rtn. Surinder Chani, Vice President, Rtn. Shyamal Chowdhury, Secretary, Rtn Rajesh Anand and Treasurer, Rtn. Dr. Dinesh.
Addressing the gathering, the newly installed President of Rotary Club Rtn. Surinder Chani said love and compassion are the two most important elements for any social service. The theme for this year is “Rotary serving humanity” and our team will focus on projects like health awareness, cleaning & greening, setting up Rotract & Interact clubs, among others, he added. During the function, the Rotary Club also handed over five wheelchairs to A&N Administration for its distribution to the needy people as part of Rotary Club’s charitable work.
The outgoing President, Rtn. Ahmed Badat recalled the activities done by the club for the year 2015-16. Earlier, the outgoing President handed over the charter to the incoming President and welcomed the gathering.
The outgoing Secretary, Rtn. Faisal Jadwet, through a power point presentation, highlighted about the various projects and activities carried out by Rotary Club for the year 2015-16. The compeering by Rtn. Abhijit Agarwal impressed one and all present on the occasion.
