Port Blair, July 25: A tree planting ceremony was organized by Forest Extension & Publicity Division at Govt. Secondary School, South Point on Monday. Smt. Vinita Malhotra, Councilor, Ward No.11, South Point was the chief guest on the occasion.
Addressing the participants, Mr Shyamal Mazumdar, Headmaster of the school informed that Van Mahotsav means – festival of tree. This began informally in July 1947 after a flourishing tree planting drive, undertaken in Delhi, in which national leaders like Dr. Rajendra Prasad and Jawaharlal Nehru participated. Van Mahotsav is an annual tree-planting festival was initiated in the year 1950 by India’s Union Minister for Agriculture, Kulapati Dr. K. M. Munshi. Further he urged the students to plant more & more trees not only because of the innumerable benefits provided by them but also they serve the human kinds for several generations. He assured that the schools authorities will be taking due care for the establishment of the saplings planted today.
