Port Blair, July 19: The meeting of the Andaman and Nicobar State Organising Committee of the CPI (M) held at Shaheed Bhavan, Anarkali, Port Blair notes with deep concern and anguish that eight Nicobarese tribal students of Andaman & Nicobar Islands Institute of Medical Science (ANIMS) have been expelled from the Institute on the plea that they were not eligible for admission to the MBBS course.
The meeting noted that these eight tribal candidates were given admission to MBBS course by the Andaman and Nicobar Administration by reducing the minimum marks of 40% to 35% in the entrance examinations.
The meeting noted that before according relaxation for the minimum marks in the entrance examination and admitting these tribal students, the Andaman and Nicobar Administration should have followed all the statutory rules and guidelines and orders of the Supreme Court.
Now, expelling the students on the basis of their non-fulfilling the required marks in the entrance examination is unjustified and arbitrary. The decision to expel the students has created considerable resentment among the Nicobarese community who are reportedly planning to go on agitation which never happened in the past.
