Port Blair, July 19: The Lt Governor, Lt Gen A.K. Singh, PVSM, AVSM, SM, VSM, (Retd), held a meeting today with Chief Secretary and Principal Secretary (Health) on two important medical issues.
Regarding the unfortunate demise of Shri Mohd. Parvez Alam, age 22 years at G B Pant Hospital, the Lt Governor has ordered a magisterial enquiry and also asked the Administration to provide ex-gratia relief to the family.
He has also asked the Principal Secretary (Health) to ascertain the need for a patient Welfare and Information Cell at G B Pant Hospital.
On the issue of Nicobari students at the medical college, the Lt Governor drew attention to the Guwahati High Court order which struck down a similar Medical Council of India order earlier.
He has asked the Chief Secretary to apprise the Nicobari students and the Tribal Council so that they could take an appropriate decision to safe guard the interest of the students. The Chief Secretary was also asked to seek legal opinion on the issue.
