Port Blair, June 30: Sudden breakdown of vehicle ferry services in the Middle Strait and Baratang sector made commuting between an uphill task today as one of the two vehicle ferries deployed at Baratang jetty have been rendered out of order.
According to reports, one of the two vehicle ferries deployed in the region developed some technical snags and commuters were forced to suffer serpentine queues to traverse between Middle Strait and Nilambur with the services of only one ferry boat.
The situation has turned even worse as after the summer vacations as schools re-opened today and many teachers, students and their family members had to reach Baratang this morning.
“The ferry breakdowns at Baratang and the Uttara Jetties have become a regular phenomenon. We have to wait for hours to board the ferry as hundreds of vehicles keep lined-up since early morning everyday at Middle Strait. Even as two ferries are not adequate in this crowded sector, inefficiency on the part of the DSS to maintain the two ferries has been forcing commuters to severe sufferings since years. On arrival at Middle Strait, commuters are subjected to wait for hours for their turn. Such mess at Middle Strait results in delayed reach to our destination particularly to destinations like Mayabunder and Diglipur,” lamented some passengers.
