The “World No Tobacco Day-2016” is being observed in Andaman and Nicobar Islands today on 31st May 2016, along with the rest of the country and the world with the theme “Get Ready for Plain Packaging”.
Plain packing is an important demand reduction measure that reduces the attractiveness of tobacco products, restricts use of tobacco packaging as a form of tobacco advertising and promotion, limits misleading packaging and labelling and increases the effectiveness of health warnings. Pictorial health warnings on tobacco packs inform users about the harmful effects of tobacco use.
On this occasion, I appeal to the policy makers, civil society and the public to take action to ensure adoption of plain packing of tobacco products and make Andaman & Nicobar Islands “Tobacco Free”.
