Port Blair, May 23: Committed to Swachh Bharat Mission, the civic body has plans to procure more Garbage Bins to ensure effective door-to-door collection and disposal of garbage in the newly created Municipal Wards. Most of the newly created Municipal Wards lack Garbage bins and residents are forced to discard garbage on the roadsides and the Council has been drawing flak for growing insanitation in the Wards.
Speaking to Andaman Sheekha, the Chairperson of Municipal Council, Smt Sheela Singh said that the funds allocated by the government in the year 2015 and 2016 were meant for only 18 Wards and did not include the newly created 6 Wards. Moreover, the area covered in the newly created Wards is more than the earlier 18 Wards. The Council is facing a tough challenge in ensuring sanitation in the newly created Ward owing to shortage of funds, she said.
“Efforts are being made to provide some Dustbins to the newly created Wards by June this year for better sanitary services and proper disposal of garbage. The Town Planning & Sanitation Committee is also mulling over procuring some additional dustbins for the newly created Municipal Wards,” she added.
Meanwhile talking to Andaman Sheekha the Chairperson has requested the public to handover the garbage to sanitary workers of PBMC and not to throw and dump garbage on the road.
