Port Blair, April 15: The Department of Fishers organized a ‘Fisher Baithak’ at Neil Island on Wednesday in the Gram Panchayat Bhavan, Neil Kendra. In the meeting, the Director of Fisheries, Mr J. Chandrasekhar highlighted about ongoing schemes of the Department and activities devolved to the three tiers of PRIs for the overall development of the Fisheries in the islands. The Fishers were also briefed about the proposed Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) programes under various subsidy schemes of the Department. The Director of Fisheries called upon the PRIs, representatives to work out schemes/projects for the development of fisheries activities in Neil Island.
During the meeting various issues/problems faced by the local fishers of Neil Island, were brought to the notice of Department by the PRIs, representatives and fishers present in the meeting.
In his address, the Pradhan, Neil Kendra informed the gathering about Digital India programme of Govt. of India. To create awareness among general public about usage of computers, GPS and other electronic gadgets the Gram Panchayat, Neil Kendra would organize a 10 day training programme.
The meeting was attended by Zilla Parishad Member, Pradhan, Panchayat Samiti member and other PRIs representatives of Gram Panchayat, Neil Kendra besides the Asst. Director of Fisheries and officials of ZFO, South Andaman. In order to resolve various issues faced by the fishers in different islands similar ‘Fisher Baithak’ would be organized at different places by the Department in future.
