Port Blair, Apr 04: In an exciting final, Andaman and Nicobar Police thrashed Port Blair Municipal Council to clinch the RSC Open T20 Cricket tournament on Monday. Batting first, Police scored 129 losing eight wickets in the allotted 20 overs. Chasing the target, PBMC lost all wickets in 19.5 overs and scored 96 runs. Venkat Swamy of Police was declared the Man of the Match for scoring 51 of 56 balls and claiming 3 wickets. The Chief Secretary, Mr Anindo Majumdar, witnessed the finals of the tournament as the chief guest, while the Director General of Police, Mr Rajesh Malik, Chairperson, Municipal Council, Smt Sheela Singh, President, Andaman and Nicobar Cricket Association, Mohammed Jadwet and a huge gathering of cricket lovers were present on the occasion.
In his address, the Chief Secretary, Mr Anindo Majumdar assured the Regional Sports Council, Port Blair to look into the demands relating to augmentation of infrastructure for promotion of sports in these islands. He congratulated the winners and the runners-up teams and gave away cash prizes and trophies to the participating teams. Individual cash prize of Rs 2000/-, Rs 1500/- and Rs 1000/- were awarded to the players of the winning team, first runner-up and second runner-up teams respectively, while team cash prize of Rs 20,000/-, Rs 10,000/- and Rs 5000/- were awarded to the top three teams. The winner of the Man of the Series Award bagged a cash prize of Rs 25000/-, Best Batsman bagged Rs 10,000/-, Best Bowler Rs 10000/-, Fastest Fifty Rs 2000/- and Man of the Match for each game was awarded Rs 1000/-.
Speaking on the occasion, the Chairperson, Municipal Council requested the Sports Department to boost sports infrastructure in the islands particularly at the historic Netaji Stadium which hosts several sports events every year. She requested the Sports Department to take necessary steps for resumption of Day and Night events at the Netaji Stadium.
Welcoming the gathering, the General Secretary, Regional Sports Council, Mr K Ganeshan expressed gratitude to All India Radio for the Live Commentary of the finals of the RSC T20 Cricket tournament. “The initiative of the AIR has helped propagate the activities of RSC Port Blair to the masses. Various other sports tournaments will also be conducted by RSC Port Blair this year,” he said.
Earlier, the Chairperson, Municipal Council, Smt Sheela Singh presented bouquet to the Chief Secretary on his arrival at Netaji Stadium. Municipal Councillor, Mr Someshwar Rao presented the bouquet to the Director General of Police, while Councillor, Eshwar Rao presented bouquet to ANCA President, Mohammed Jadwet.
