Port Blair, Mar 17: The Swachhta Awareness Team (SAT) of Port Blair Municipal Council led by Senior Sanitary Inspector, Mr Vijay Kumar undertook the exercise in Ward no. 10 on Thursday to identify areas under Open Defecation, preparing door to door plan for collection of Dry and Wet waste, creating awareness to user into Open defecation free city & proposed solid waste management plan, besides motivating people to undertake the construction of individual household toilets and converting insanitary toilets/pits into sanitary toilets.
Smt Sheela Singh, Chairperson, Port Blair Municipal Council took stalk of the ongoing survey work by undertaking transect walk in ward no.10, along with SAT and issued necessary instructions.
While the Port Blair Municipal Council in its endeavor to implement the objectives of Swachh Bharat Mission is striving hard to identify area under Open Defecation and evolving a plan to address the issue by way of proposing construction of Community Toilet and Public Toilets, it is the responsibility of each citizen to make the environment Open Defecation Free.
Citizens are equally responsible to inculcate an attitude and behavioral pattern involving hygiene & cleanliness and to percolate the practice onto the younger generation. The Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) aims to ensure that no households engage in the practice of Open Defecation, and also to ensure insanitary & Pit toilets are converted to sanitary toilets.
Based on door to door survey households practicing Open Defecation have been identified in ward no. 09,15,16,17,18,19,20,21,22,23 & 24. Few households do not have access to proposed Community Toilets. The list of such households has been published at prominent places in each wards as mentioned above. Claims / objections to the published list, if any may be filed with respective Sanitary Inspector at the designated locations within seven (07) days as per the details hereunder.
Such identified households have been requested to take up construction of Individual Household Toilets within a period of 90 days failing which action under the provisions of Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and their Rehabilitation Act 2013 shall be initiated which includes penalty as well as imprisonment.
The households have been requested to contact respective Ward Councilors / Sanitary Inspectors and fill in prescribed application format to avail incentives of Govt. of India. The list of Sanitary Inspector along with designate location is as under:-

Citizens have been requested not to get misled that incentives are the cost of construction of toilet. It goes without saying that Construction & Use of Sanitary toilet is the individual responsibility of the household. Relinquishing such responsibilities will only invite penalty as per Law. The Swachh Bharat Mission survey for all wards of Port Blair Municipal Council shall conclude on 31st March 2016 which would evolve holistic plan for swatchhta activities to be implemented till 2019. While efforts for making Port Blair city Open Defectaion Free is scheduled to be achieved by 2016.
