Port Blair, Feb 17: The Department of Homescience, JNRM, in collaboration with the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), New Delhi organised a one day basic training programme on Human Rights to the student community of JNRM on 17th February 2016. The Chief Guest Shri Theva Neethi Dhas, IAS, Secretary (law) Andaman & Nicobar Administration while delivering inaugural address emphasized the need for awareness about legal rights and services. In order to bring peace and prosperity to the nation and across globe one should know and prevent violation of human rights, he opined. He described the violations that took place against the Jews in World War II and also in Andamans. He praised the Constitution of India which ensures equality, liberty and fraternity to all citizens because of which even ordinary persons are able to achieve success in life.
Dr R.N.Rath, Principal (Retd), MGGC, the Guest of Honour dealt in detail about the Fundamental Duties and Rights. He also explained the UN Convention and India’s key role as signatory.
Dr N.Francis Xavier, Principal JNRM exhorted the students to be a brand ambassadors for stopping violence against humanity. He also advised the students to utilise the services of NHRC. Shri.K.Venkatesan, HOD, Home science and Convener of this programme stressed the need for this such kind of legal awareness for the students and role of NHRC in this noble mission.
Dr.S.S.Sreekumar, Associate Professor and HOD, Political Science delivered a lecture on Introduction to Human Rights, Constitutional provisions, Universal Declaration on Human Rights, 1948 and International Covenants regarding Human Rights. Dr.RVR.Murthy, Associate Professor & HOD, Political Science, MGGC, Mayabunder spoke on Human Rights Institutions in India, Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993, functioning of NHRC/SHRCs and Other National/State Commissions. Shri.K.Venkatesan, HOD, Homescience delivered a lecture on Rights of Women and Children with special emphasis on UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, 1979 and its optional protocols, UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, 1989 and its optional protocols. Shri Sivabalan, Advocate & Notary Public spoke about the rights of vulnerable, bonded labour, child labour etc. The students were sensitised about the Rights of Women and Children, Rights of other Vulnerable & Marginalised Groups, & Human Rights Institution in India etc., Smt.Nidhi Katiyar, Assistant Professor welcomed the gathering while Smt.Nidhi Shekhawat, Assistant Professor proposed vote of thanks.
