Port Blair, Jan 12: Perveen Charitable Trust working in the field of Health and Women and Child Welfare with special focus to prevent Breast Cancer/ Cancer organized a workshop on “Promoting Gender Equality” at Namunaghar village on 11-01-2016 in association with Unnati and Namunaghar Gram Panchayat. Smti Preetima Kumari, Pradhan Namunaghar Gram Panchayat was the Chief Guest. She in her inaugural address said that women have to fight the traditional Indian male dominated society to merge women as stronger and independent entities. Therefore she emphasized the women need to come out of their shell so that they could contribute positively for the society and in turn to themselves. She also desired such programme may be organized at frequent interval for which required support will be extended by the Gram Panchayat as extended in the organizing this workshop at Namunaghar. She further said that the efforts of Perveen Charitable Trust to organize such useful workshop is a welcoming and appreciable efforts for benefitting rural women community.
Earlier Smti. Shaima Shamim, Secretary Perveen Charitable Trust explained in detailed about the activities of Perveen Charitable Trust and assistance being given to Breast Cancer patients and support extended to children. She said gender equality and justice can be achieved in reality and in day to day life only when women are actually empowered as gender equality lays the foundation of an effective society.
Dr. Almas Shamim, resource person highlighted that Gender equality is achieved when women and men enjoy the same rights and opportunities across all sectors of society, including economic participation and decision-making, and when the different behaviours, aspirations and needs of women and men are equally valued and favoured. She also said that Gender is socially constructed and learning gender based behavior helps us to change the negative aspects of the previous assigned gender roles and also showed videos in support of the changes that wished to be seen in the society which was highly appreciated and liked by the participants.
There was good response from the community and women participants who attended in good number shared their experiences. PRI members attended also actively participated.
