Port Blair, Nov 17: Prompt assistance by the Andaman and Nicobar Command saved the life of a foreigner, who developed decompression sickness while driving at Havelock. As per the information from Havelock, one patient, Mr Ron Katz (24 years) from Israel developed some symptoms after repeated diving on last Saturday. The patient was evacuated by routine boat services in the evening and was admitted in the ICU on Monday. Later, the patient was evaluated by Dr Avijit Roy, DDH and Port Health Officer and it was found that the patient was having Type I for Decompression sickness with pains in multiple joints and radiating type a life threatening condition.
After initial evaluation and investigation, the patient was shifted to Clearance Diving Unit Indian Navy at Haddo. The patient underwent Recompression Therapy for more than two hours and after improvement the patient was handed over to Dr. Avijit Roy and shifted to ICU of GB Pant Hospital at 2 am in the morning. The treatment was imparted under the able guidance of the newly posted diving Specialist Surg Cdr Dr Kamal Mishra, INHS Dhanvantri. The operation was monitored by Lt Cdr Sailesh Tyagi, NM BAR Staff Officer CDU Port Blair. Mr Ron was discharged on Tuesday after complete recovery.
