Port Blair, November 09: Vehicles crawled on the Port Blair streets as shoppers converged at popular market places to celebrate Dhanteras on Monday.
While commuters complained of having experienced gridlocks on almost every arterial stretch, however the DySP traffic police, Mohd Umar said that vehicular movement was reported to have been heavy near market places but no major jams had been brought to their notice.
Heavy traffic was reported at Bhathubasthi, Junglighat and Aberdeen Bazaar area.
DySP traffic police, Mohd Umar claimed extra deployment near Ghantaghar, Junglighat, Model School, Ratnam Market area, Dairyfarm helped them keep the situation “under control”. But commuters begged to differ.
“I wanted to go to Junglighat but got stuck in the Gandhi Statue traffic for over 30 minutes. There were no traffic cops in the area despite the police being aware of the rush on weekends. Proper arrangements should have been in place to manage traffic in view of Dhanteras,” said Mr Pronoy Hawaldar, 27, who got stuck in the traffic. (Photo Courtesy: Tanujit Sarkar)
