Port Blair, Nov 09: A lecture on Disaster Preparedness was held in JNRM today to sensitize the staff and students on the procedure to be followed in case of any disaster. Dr Francis Xavier, Principal JNRM explained how JNRM is one of the vulnerable areas and was affected during the tsunami of 2004.
He explained the evacuation procedure to be adopted in case of any eventuality using the new emergency exits constructed towards the rear of the college. The wardens of the hostels have also been told to be alert in view of the earthquakes reported during the last few hours.
He also told the students that the Disaster Management Authority of the Administration will also be conducting a sensitizing programme in the near future and draw up a proper evacuation plan and drill for JNRM.
Mrs Pearl Devdas, HoD Geography told the students not to panic in case of an emergency and follow the procedure to leave the building in a disciplined manner. She also told the gathering to be prepared for any eventuality.
Shri Zafar Ali a former student now working as Analyst with GIS in Dubai also addressed the students and told them about the use of modern techniques being used in preparing models for disaster prevention in cities.
