Port Blair, Aug 3: The Nicobar Police organized an awareness campaign “Value your Life” to prevent suicides by the population on July 31, 2015 at Perka Community hall, Car Nicobar. More than 300 villagers from Kakana, Malacca, Perka and Tamaloo village attended the campaign. Rev. Giles of St. Paul Church, Perka blessed the gathering.
Smt. Geeta Rani Verma, SP, Nicobar, Mr Chamberlain Paul, Vice Chief Captain, Tribal Council, Dr. Hemawathi, Smt Indira Devi, CDPO, Rev. Lot Abraham of St. Thomas Cathedral Church, Rev. Abiho of St. Stephen Church, Kakana and Imam Mohamadi Masjid, HQ, Perka- Hafiz Asad Umer Sahab addressed the gathering.
During the programme, the participants were made aware regarding the factors/ reasons, responsible for committing suicide, warning signs of suicide, suicide preparation tips, how to cope up with suicidal thoughts were also explained by different speakers in their lectures. They should first identify the persons with symptoms of depression and counsel him through doctors and parents/friends/relatives. One small play was also staged by the district police showing how a person commits suicide due to depression/frustration and the miserable conditions of his family members after his act of suicide. Before concluding the camp, a pledge was also administrated to the effect that they will not commit suicide in any circumstances an individual should enjoy the beautiful life and they should search the purpose of life. All villagers appreciated the efforts of the district police for arranging such awareness camp at Car Nicobar.
