Port Blair, July 28: Students and staff of JNRM gathered in the college auditorium to condole the death of former President, Bharat Ratna A.P.J Abdul Kalam who passed away in Shillong yesterday.
Speaking on the occasion Dr.N.Francis Xavier, Principal JNRM described Dr.A.P.J Abdul Kalam as a towering personality who touched millions of lives through his scholarship, statesmanship and humanity.
He described how Dr.Kalam loved the Islands and made special plans for their development after the 2004 Tsunami.
He also described his personal interaction with Dr.Kalam during his visit to the Islands in 2009. Mrs.Pearl Devdas HOD(Geography) reminisced about her meeting with Dr.A.P.J Abdul Kalam during his visit to JNRM in 2005.
Dr.Manju Nair, Associate Professor Deptt. Of Geography described how Dr.Kalam found time to reply letters to all those who wrote to him. Shri.K.Venkatesan, HOD Home Science who had long association with Dr.A.P.J.Abdul Kalam described that the greatest virtue of Dr.A.P.J.Abdul Kalam was his humility and down-to-earth nature.
Two minute silence was observed as a mark of respect to the departed soul. Earlier the staff and students paid floral tribute at the portrait of Dr.A.P.J.Abdul Kalam. The programme was compered by Dr.N.Laxmi, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Hindi.
