Port Blair, July 17: Safety on the Birchgunj road during night has become a major concern, the reason being lack of monitoring by the Gram Panchayat Birchgunj. Number of complaints of faulty streetlights have been received by the Gram Panchayat Birchgunj but it seems that the authorities of Gram Panchayat Birchgunj is least bothered.
Commuters are at a risk as half of the street lights are not functioning in Birchgunj along with damaged and potholed roads. Most streets connecting residential colonies do not have proper lighting.
Motorists and pedestrians complain that the concerned Panchayat has done little to help them in this regard.
Residents alleged, despite many complaints about non-operating streetlights, no repair work has begun. Mr Moorty, resident of Birchgunj area says, “For past few days there is no streetlight in our lane. The roads also have many potholes. It is difficult to drive at night with the water filled potholes. I have complained several times, but my complaints have not been addressed till now.”
No proper repair by the contractor and lack of monitoring by the authorities of Gram Panchayat Birchgunj has forced the people of Birchgunj to stay in the dark due to faulty streetlights.
Surprisingly in other areas like New Pahargaon and Shadipur one can often see street lights switched on in day time also.
