Port Blair, July 12: Believe it or not, a recent data of Port Blair Municipal Council shows that Port Blairians owed PBMC about Rs. 14 crores in unpaid taxes accrued over decades.
Talking to Andaman Sheekha, the Chairman, Port Blair Municipal Council, Mr M Arumugam said that nearly 90% of people residing in Municipal area have not paid their water tax since a long time.
He also said that maximum number of businessmen, who are supposed to pay property tax and several other taxes have also not paid their taxes since last many years.
Mr Arumugam further added that due to this non-payment of taxes. the PBMC is facing a lot of problems. “We are unable to create posts, unable to increase the salaries of workers,” Mr Arumugam said.
Talking to Andaman Sheekha, Mr Arumugam requested the general public and businessmen to pay their tax on regular basis so that PBMC gets some more funds to create posts and also to provide better facilities to the public.
