Port Blair, May 11: The Directorate of Disaster Management, A & N Administration conducted an awareness-cum-sensitization programme on Disaster Management & Preparedness on the eve of National Technology Day for 130 Holiday camp students of Science Centre (A Society under A&N Administration) Goodwill Estate, Corbyn’s Cove Road, Shadipur, Port Blair on 11th May, 2015 in two different sessions (morning and evening) in order to give exposure to the students on the role & allied activities in Disaster Management.
Shri Debasis Paul, Education Assistant, Science Centre briefed about the programme and National Technology Day to all officers and students, which was set out to motivate the Students to effectively participate in the disaster management programme. He also thanks officers of Disaster Management for organizing disaster awareness programme for the students.
Shri Gyan Singh, Asst. Director (Log.), DM welcomed the gathering in the programme by elaborating the role Disaster Management in schools and also highlighted the student’s participation in disaster management activities for creating disaster awareness and preparedness in ANI.
Shri T.K.S Ajayan, Assistant Director (Ops), DM interacted with the students by asking different disasters terminologies and briefed about the different types of disasters and present disasters occurrences in this UT. Further he also explained Do’s and Dont’s on various disasters. During presentation he elaborated about the vulnerability profile, Preparedness, mechanism & status of Disaster Management functioning in A&N Islands to mitigate and tackle the disaster and emergency situation and played a video clip on how Tsunami generated. He also advised Students to learn basic Do’s and Dont’s on various disasters which will be very helpful to them during any emergency.
Shri Deen Mohammed, Information Officer, DM explained about the Emergency Communication System of this UT and practically demonstrated the communication equipments and its functions in State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC). He further elaborated the messaging system of SEOC and students also noted the emergency contacts numbers of SEOC.
Shri Ashok Kumar Sharma, Director (DM) appreciated all the students for participating in the Disaster Awareness programme and briefed about various concepts of Disaster Management and also urged to the students to sensitize the same to their parents and neighbors also.
