Port Blair, May 03: In a major step towards upgrading facilities, the Andaman Lakshadweep Harbor Works (ALHW) has secured approval of the Centre to replace decades old and outdated machinery in various Ports across these islands. Majority of the machinery viz. Cranes, Forklifts etc were commissioned at various Jetties decades ago and the replacement will ensure more efficient services once the latest machinery is commissioned.
Speaking to Andaman Sheekha, the Chief Engineer of ALHW, Mr Bimal Sinha informed that the Centre has sanctioned 39 crores for replacement of old Jetty equipments. Majority of the machinery in various jetties were commissioned way back in the year 1965 and their replacement with latest machinery by 2016 will improve services significantly, he said.
