Port Blair, Apr 12: The Andaman and Nicobar Administration has placed three senior staffs of Government run swimming pool, under suspension after death of a 13 year old boy in the pool. Meanwhile, taking serious view of tragic incident of death of Master Sumit Kumar, a 13 year aged boy in the swimming pool of Netaji Stadium on Apr 10, 2015, the Lt. Governor of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Lt. Gen (Retd.) A K Singh has ordered a magisterial enquiry into cause of death of the deceased boy.
Enquiry will also deal with the lapses, inaction, if any, on the part of any official responsible for implementing safety regulations, fixing responsibility on the part of officers and officials, if any and recommending corrective measure of safety to be taken to avoid any such untoward incident in future.
The enquiry will be conducted by Sub-Division Magistrate (South Andaman) who has been directed to complete the enquiry within two weeks, official sources said today.
“It has been decided to keep the swimming pool closed pending the enquiry and till availability of trained manpower for ensuring safety of swimmers,” sources in Andaman’s Sports Department said here today.
Meanwhile, three officials of the Directorate of Sports & Youth Affairs namely Mr. Kanta Rao, Assistant Director (Sports), Mr. Deepak Raj Kishen, Assistant Supervisor (Sports) and Mr. V. Selvam, Swimming Coach, have been placed under suspension with immediate effect.
“A regular Director (Sports) is also shortly being posted and the officer holding additional charge of post of Director (Sports) on Current Duty Charge (CDC) basis is being relieved of the additional charge of Director (Sports) to facilitate a fair and impartial enquiry after which appropriate disciplinary action will be taken as warranted against the concerned officials and officers,” a release issued by the Secretary (Sports) said here today.
