Port Blair, Feb 09: As part of environmental initiatives of Andaman College (ANCOL), Forty two students of ANCOL ECO CLUB visited Sippighat Organic farm on 7th February 2015.The theme selected for the study tour was “ Problem of Land degradation: Possible solutions”. The team spend some quality time at the farm, investigating some of the possible solutions for the problem of land degradation. The team was technically guided by Shri P Joy, Agriculture Officer attached to the farm.
Earlier Principal of the college, Dr R Dev Das flagged off the team from the college premises. Addressing to the students he stressed that land degradation may be the result of numerous factors or a combination thereof, including anthropogenic (human-related) activities such as unsustainable land management practices and climatic variations. He further added that we human beings are responsible to some extent for this problem as accelerated degradation is typically associated with human modification of the environment.
The team was led by Shri Bency Joy, Programme Coordinator; National Environmental Awareness Campaign at ANCOL accompanied by Dr C.Pusphavalli and Shri Swapan Biswas all faculties of the college. A open house quiz was also organized in which Pooja Rao from Psychology Dept, Shivani from BCom(CS), Ummi Suraiyya ,BSc(Psy) & Diksha(BBA) bagged the first three positions. Similarly in the feedback test conducted after the tour Razeena Begum, BA Eng, Shameena ,BSc(Psy) and Neelam ,BA(Soc) bagged the first three positions respectively.
The tour was conducted as a part of the NEAC-2014-15 campaign supported by CPR centre, Port Blair.
