Port Blair, Jan 12: A huge chunk of New Pahargaon road on Sunday afternoon subsided towards the Airport, leaving huge cracks on the road surface.
According to reports, cracks were visible since last one week but no one cared to take precaution finally on Sunday afternoon, nearly 20 mts chunk of road bed along with entire left portion of the road, shifted towards the runway.
Such subsiding towards the side of Runway would have resulted in total shutdown of Port Blair’s lone Airport.
According to reports the Airport Authority of India is digging out earth from the area just opposite to Sapna Theatre, which resulted in this incident. The earth extracted from the area is being used to fill the marshy area hind INS Utkrosh office buildings.
Luckily there was no vehicle on the road, when the road stretch subsided.
The Andaman PWD has blocked the road for now. Neither officials from Airport Authority of India nor from ANC were available to comment on this issue.
