Port Blair, December 24: The Lt. Governor, Lt Gen A K Singh (Retd), today inaugurated a three-day photo exhibition on the life & works of former Prime Minister of India, Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee to mark the birthday of Atalji, which falls on Dec. 25. This also sets in motion ‘Good Governance Week’ being observed all over the Islands from today.
The Lt. Governor went round the exhibition and evinced keen interest in the photographs focusing different facets of Atalji’s life as also his visit to these Islands as Prime Minister way back in the year 1998. The function was attended among others by the Chief Secretary, Shri Anand Prakash, the ZP Adhayksha, Ms. Mariyam Bibi, SSWB Chairperson, Smt. Ratna Kannan, Smt. Rupa Ray besides the Secretaries and other Heads of Departments, Veteran Hari Narayan Arora also graced the occasion as did Mr. Deepak Kumar Jha, State General Secretary, BJP, Ms Sheela Singh, Councillor (PBMC) and Mr. Sreepad Deshpande, General Secretary of BJP.,
In his brief address on the occasion, the Lt. Governor said that the true tribute to Atalji would be if all of us commit ourselves to the task of serving the people in particular and the nation as a whole. He said, Atalji always stood for a clean and good governance and the present government at the Centre under the leadership of Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi also stands by the same principle of serving the people at large.
The Lt. Governor urged the people not to distract the Administration from its focus of carrying forward the development in the Islands. Describing Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee as one of the stalwart Parliamentarians of India, the Lt. Governor said that the exhibition has been organized to illuminate the minds of the young generation to have an idea about the former Prime Minister. He appealed to the people to rejoice the occasion as Atalji has been honourned with the Country’s highest award Bharat Ratna today.
Referring to governance, he said the main task of government is governance. Governance has two issues. Firstly making rules and enforcing them. If we don’t have rules our society won’t function. Secondly, to provide services. As regard observance of good governance in the Islands, the Lt Governor said good governance will be observed not just on 25th of December but every day. Besides Port Blair, this exhibition will also move to North & Middle Andaman and Nicobar as well. On 26th December, every government official would remain in their office and attend to the problems of citizens. On 27th December, the ‘Citizen Charter’ will be released. Exhorting the government officials to work for the people, he said the true tribute to Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee would be when officers and officials realizes that the real meaning of governance is to serve the people and this is possible only when all of us work in the true spirit, observed the Lt Governor.
