Port Blair, Dec 02: As a part of Navy Week Celebrations 2014, a band concert was organised at Marina Park on 30 Nov 14. The musical extravaganza consisted of exhilarating performances by the band of INS Jarawa. In addition to enthralling variety of martial music, the show had popular Indian and western numbers.
The Naval Band at Port Blair is part of INS Jarawa, commissioned in 1985. The Band conductor is Gopal Singh, MCPO MUS II. Progressing from a variety of martial music, successive conductors of the band have increased the repertoire to include western classical solos, duets and light popular music, jazz and Indian Ragas. The instrumentation of the band has evolved to include percussion, electronic as well as traditional Indian instruments.
Over the years the band has entertained local audiences at various venues like Ross Island, Raj Niwas and Marina Park and also on occasions like Republic Day, Independence Day and MILAN. The band has also performed on various national and international festivals such as Military tattoos in South Korea, China, Philippines and Indonesia.
