Port Blair, Nov 13: The Andaman Sarvajanik Nirman Vibhag Mazdoor Sangh (CITU) has organized a Mass Demonstration in front of the office of the Chief Engineer, APWD, Port Blair today at 3 p.m. demanding regularization of the services of daily rated mazdoors working in various Divisions of APWD.
ASNVMS also demanded implementation of Govt. of India’s order on 1/30th of pay scheme for Daily Rated Mazdoors of APWD, increase in the minimum wages, etc.
Addressing the gathering, Mr D. Ayyappan, General Secretary of the Non-Gazetted Govt. Officers’ Association said that about 3000 posts of various categories are lying vacant in APWD while hundreds of daily rated mazdoors are working for quite a long period ranging from 2 years to 15 years in APWD and demanded that the services of these daily rated mazdoors should be regularized immediately. Boominathan, General Secretary of the Union also addressed the meeting.
Hundreds of daily rated employees from various Divisions of APWD at Port Blair who participated in the Mass Demonstration, thereafter, took out a procession and staged a Mass Demonstration in front of the
Office of the Labour Commissioner at Supply Line, Port Blair.
Addressing the workers at the Labour Commissioner’s office premises, Mr TS Sreekumar, Asst. General Secretary said that the Labour Department has failed to safeguard the interests of workers in the islands. Thereafter, the workers went in a procession which culminated at Tiranga Park where the gathering was addressed by CITU leader Mr D. Lakshman Rao. He blamed the Andaman and Nicobar Administration for its failure to settle various issues and demands of the daily rated workers working in various departments of the A & N Administration.
